Ages 13 - 17 - New for Camp 2017 - Resident Campers interested in enrolling
into the Horse Rescue Program will be carefully selected by filling out a
questionnaire during the regular resident summer program (parental approval
needed). The Rescue Program covers all aspects of horse ownership and
explains, in more detail the issue of equine overpopulation in United
States.
The program also
discusses BLM wild mustangs, training and ongoing behavioral issues with
unsocialized or traumatized auction horses. The Camp arranges for trips
to local auctions & horse rescues, out of state auctions & stables,
exposes the bidding process.
During each year the campers can bid anywhere from
1 to 3 horses that they would like to bring back and care for while at camp. It
is a very "hands-on", career oriented experience which promotes
large animal science, veterinary medicine & technology oriented College
studies. All procedures and training are under an equine professional's
supervision
• Care & Maintenance - Campers learn how to properly care
for the sick or emaciated horse. This sometimes involves changing shifts for
camera watching, ration feeding, following quarantine procedures and
administering medications at odd hours and in odd places.
•Horse
Rescue Program is a great start for campers that are looking into future
equestrian careers
•Trips
to the Unadilla Auction in Unadilla, NY or the New Holland Auction Stables in
New Holland, PA to witness and participate in the bidding process.
•Horse
Overpopulation - Campers witness firsthand the ongoing issue with equine
overpopulation & its effects on ethics and BLM sustainability. The horse
auctions display an array of horses in different circumstances.
•Medical
Assistance - Campers learn basics of medical first aid procedures, routine
examinations & diagnoses, equine management practices where recognizing
early signs of illness changes the treatment process.
