Obi Ndefo , celebrated for his role in the TV series “Dawson’s Creek,” has passed away at the age of 51, five years after losing both his legs in a hit-and-run accident .
His sister, Nkem Ndefo, shared the news on Facebook this Saturday, posting a heartfelt selfie with her brother.
She expressed her deep sadness over his death and comfort in knowing he is now at peace.
Obi passed away early Wednesday morning at a hospital in the Los Angeles area.
Sadly, his heart failed due to his long-term struggle with the eating disorder orthorexia , Nkem Ndefo shared.
On August 17, 2019, Obi’s life took a sudden and devastating turn when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver outside Erewhon Market in Los Angeles.
The accident resulted in severe injury and eventual amputation of both his legs.
The incident was not only physically traumatic but also brought significant financial strain.
To help cover the substantial medical costs and the expenses for prosthetic limbs, a GoFundMe campaign was launched, raising over $287,000.
This support was crucial in assisting Obi through a challenging period of recovery.
Despite the severe injuries he sustained, Obi approached his recovery with fierce determination.
Within just over a month of the accident, he was back in the gym, focusing on strengthening his upper body and adapting to his new physical reality.
Obi’s commitment to maintaining his physical and mental health was evident in his words: “I couldn’t live in this world without becoming sort of like an Olympic athlete of certain things… of kindness and of health.”
His ability to maintain a positive outlook and adapt to his new circumstances shows his unyielding spirit and strength.

Obi is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Bodie Wells, Joey Potter’s brother-in-law on “ Dawson’s Creek ,” a role he played from 1998 to 2002.
