To fans around the globe, Robin Williams was a unique talent, capable of making people laugh uncontrollably or bringing them to tears with his moving performances.
From his memorable roles in comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire to his powerful performances in dramas such as Good Will Hunting , Williams left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.
We will always remember his iconic characters, such as Mork from Mork & Mindy, the vibrant DJ in Good Morning, Vietnam, the charming Genie in Aladdin, and the motivational teacher in Dead Poets Society.
Beyond his screen presence, he was known for his warmth, generosity, and genuine love for making people happy.
Tragically, the world lost this extraordinary talent 10 years ago, when he passed away at the age of 63.
As we remember his life and career, his son Zak Williams offers a touching reflection on what made Robin truly special.
While the world saw Robin Williams as a legendary actor, his children—Zak, Zelda, and Cody—knew him simply as “Dad.”
He was a playful and loving father who cherished time spent collecting comic books, riding his bike, and making his children laugh.
As the 10th anniversary of his passing approached, Zak Williams now 41, shared how his father’s battle with Lewy body dementia affected their family.
He also shared how his own young children Mickey and Zola, are beginning to enjoy their Grandpa Robin’s movies, keeping his memory alive in a way that brings both comfort and joy.
In a recent interview with USA Today, Zak Williams, one of Robin’s three children, shared his thoughts on his father’s life, career, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him best.
When asked about Robin’s favorite movie to work on, Zak revealed that Good Morning, Vietnam holds a special place in both their hearts.
“It’s my favorite film of his,” Zak said, “and I think he just had a blast doing it.”
For Robin, the connection to Good Morning, Vietnam went beyond the role itself.
The film allowed him to portray a character with ties to the Armed Forces, a connection that meant a lot to their Navy family background.
While the world fell in love with Robin’s performance in Mrs. Doubtfire, a film filled with humor, heart, and a message about the importance of family, Robin’s affection for the movie was rooted in something much closer to home.
According to Zak, one of the reasons Robin cherished working on Mrs. Doubtfire was because it was filmed in the Bay Area, allowing him to stay close to his family during production.
Zak emphasized how important family was to his father, saying, “I think he loved Mrs. Doubtfire because he had an opportunity to film that in the Bay Area and be near his family.”
This was the deep bond Robin shared with his children and the priority he placed on being present in their lives.
Zak shared warm memories of growing up with a father who never lost his sense of playfulness.
Robin enjoyed playing video games, collecting toys, and immersing himself in comic books.
Zak fondly remembered how his dad was “ a big kid at heart,” always bringing laughter and fun into their home.
Despite his fame, Robin Williams was just known as “Robin” in their San Francisco neighborhood.
Zak recalled how his dad would often be seen biking around town, simply being a friendly and approachable neighbor.
He was not just a celebrity; he was a beloved member of the community.
It’s hard to believe that a decade has passed since Robin Williams left us.
His absence is still felt deeply by fans, colleagues, and most of all, his family.
Through Zak’s reflections , we gain a glimpse into the private life of a man who, despite his fame, remained grounded, loving, and deeply connected to those he cared about.
Robin Williams’ legacy extends far beyond his films. He touched lives with his humor, his humanity, and his heart.
As we remember him today, we are reminded of the joy he brought to the world and the love he had for his family.
Zak’s memories of his father are a beautiful tribute to a man who was one of the greatest actors of our time.
He was also a remarkable human being whose light continues to shine in the lives of those he touched.
Robin Williams was found dead at 63 in his California home on August 11, 2014.
The final autopsy revealed that he died by suicide due to hanging.
The report showed that while he had depression and anxiety, no illegal substances were involved, and the prescription medications in his system were at safe levels.
Williams had been diagnosed with diffuse Lewy body dementia , a serious brain condition that affects the brain’s function and can cause severe mental and physical symptoms.
His widow, Susan Schneider Williams, described the disease as a “terrorist” in his brain, highlighting how it deeply affected his health .
After his death , experts confirmed that his condition was more severe than initially thought, and his body was cremated with his ashes spread over San Francisco Bay.
