Celiac disease, a disease of the digestive system that damages the small intestine(腸)and interferes with the absorption(養分の吸収)of nutrients, is caused by an abnormal reaction to gluten(グルテン), a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. Now, researchers believe they have identified the three peptides(ペプチド)in gluten that are responsible for triggering the harmful immune response. Currently, the only treatment for celiac disease is the elimination of gluten from one's diet, but experts are hopeful that these findings could lead to the development of drug treatments or even a vaccine.
