A Great Place to Work(2)

Shiga and his co-workers talk about the importance of finding a good balance between work life and home life. And the way Great Lakes is helping them cope.

work one's butt off [ 猛烈に(懸命に)働く
work your butt/ass/arse off
=(not polite)to work very hard(LDOCE)

#This is very common to talk about working extremely

cut someone some slack [ (人に)猶予を与える、息抜きをさせてやる
cut/give somebody some slack
=to allow someone to do something without criticizing them or making it more difficult(LDOCE)

#"cut some slack for yourself or someone else" means "ease off" or "loosen up," "relax" or "take it easy."

work-life balance [ 仕事と生活のバランス
=the ability to give a sensible amount of time and effort to your work and to your life outside work, for example to your family or to other interests:
*You can't have a proper work-life balance if you're in the office for 12 hours a day.(LDOCE)

on top of [ うまく処理して、仕事を片付けて
=in complete control of a situation:

#If you are "on top of something," when it's not physically, it usually means you are in control. You know all about it. You can handle it with no trouble.

grouch [ 不平を言う
=to complain in a slightly angry way [= moan]

#Cortez uses the word "grouch." She could have said "grumble" or she
could have even said "bellyache." You can use bellyache" as a verb to mean complain a little bit.

bellyache
=to complain a lot, especially about something unimportant

*bellyacheって、名詞ならstomachache、びっくり!

overall [ (文頭で用いて)全体的に見れば、概して
=generally

chafe at the bit [ いらだつ
=to feel impatient or annoyed

lo and behold [ 驚いたことに、これは驚いた<会話で相手の注意を引くために使われる>
=used before mentioning something surprising that happened - used humorously

morale [ やる気、士気、勤労意欲
=the level of confidence and positive feelings that people have, especially people who work together, who belong to the same team etc:
*A win is always good for morale.(LDOCE)

#It's "m-o-r-a-l-e" with the stress on
the second syllable, moRAle. And it refers to the enthusiasm and cheerfulness and happiness at the office, the good feelings about work and colleagues and the company.
