尖閣列島をめぐって中国との関係が険悪になっている。経済力、軍事力をつけた中国が日本に強い姿勢をとるようになったからだと言われている。これは間違いないと思うが、私が以前から不思議に思ってきたのは、中国の経済や軍事力が日本よりはるかに小さかった頃から、その国際的な地位は日本より大きかったことである。３０年以上も前に、日本は中国が攻めてきたら抵抗できるか、中国は日本を占領するのではないかと外国人に質問されたことがある。
中国が国連の常任理事国であることも関係しているだろうが、その経済、軍事力に比べて、国際的には高く評価されていたように思う。アメリカも早くからアジアに関しては日本よりは中国の意向に大変気を使っていた。
日本は長い間ＧＤＰが世界第二位であり、アジアの諸国を経済的、技術的に援助したにもかかわらず、常に中国より国際的評価が低かったのは何故だろうか。国際的評価とは何かを具体的にあげることはできないが、世界の人々が抱く中国の存在感がずっと以前から日本よりはるかに大きかったように私には思われる。
The dispute over Senkaku islands between Japan and China is getting tense. Many people say that China who became economically and militarily strong is exerting presure on Japan. There is no doubt about that. But I noticed that China had been considered as one of major countries in the world since long time ago when its economic and military powers were far smaller than those of Japan. The U.S. has appeared to show bigger concern about China than Japan.
I was once asked by a foreigner more than 30 years ago, "If China attacks Japan, can your country counter it ?". It seems that the influence of China on international society has been overestimated, partly because it is a permanent member of UN security council.
Japan had been the second largest economic power in terms of GDP and offered technical and economic assistances to Asian and other developping countries. Nevertheless our country could not show large presence in international society compared to China. What is wrong with us ?

日本は敗戦後アメリカにおんぶにだつこで主に防衛や外交にに力を注がなかつた点が今の現状です。
もつと発言をして、行動をとらないと日本は何もできない国としか評価してくれません。
金は出すが自衛隊は出したくない！ 自衛隊を派遣するにしても危険でない地域だけではよその国からバカにされるだけです。軍隊とは危険なところに行くのが本来ですから。 (2012.10.03 19:08:15)
