1) claim to be journalist ジャーナリストであると名乗る、自称する This is the way "claim" as usually used in English. It doesn't mean complain or complaint like it does in Japanese.
日本語では、クレームというと苦情と同じような意味で使われますが、ここで は、違います。
2) questionable 問題の多い、いかがわしい Something "questionable" is something you should watch out for. It's doubtful, it's problematic, it's fishy.
If you "come across" something, you find it when you're not really looking forward. It just kind of appears in front of you and you notice it.
4) a giant step away ~は大きく違っている、離れている "A giant step away" means it's very different from. I think maybe the phrase "giant step" as used because there's a kids game, a children's game in the U.S. called "Mother, may I?" and the basics of the game is one child is the mother and the other children are told what kind of steps they can take to come up closer toward the mother. They can take baby steps, regular steps or giant steps, and they have to be careful to say, "Mother, may I?" before they actually move, or they have to go
different steps as well.
5) I think this is a mistake many people make. They look at the statistics and then expect individual cases to reflect exactly the same information. But, of course, statistics are made up of many many different individual cases. And so I think for each individual case,
indication of possibilities.

"Evolve into" sounds like a slow process of changing from one state to another state.
