As I wrote earlier, I am neither condemning nor denying their rights to enjoy the material wealth we have been enjoying ourselves. My concern is its speed and quantity. I also feel that they have somewhat bypassed a long and gradual road to get where they are from the era of ‘having so little.’ It is like skipping grades from elementary school to college.

Let me explain this way. When I left Japan in 1964 most Japanese didn’t even have a bathroom, or a phone in their house, let alone owning a car. When I went back two decades later, finally most household had both. It took another decade before I saw most people owned their own cell phones. In Japan, I think, it took four decades from ‘Tokyo Olympic’ to the point that an office girl could by her own car.
Even in America, it is only this past five years people could own cell phone and digital camera.
China, on the other hand, as an example of an office girl’s salary in Chengdu, it took only eight years from the time of ‘poor era’ to the point of owning a car. In other words, they entered ‘high tech’ era from ‘material poverty’ in one leap. Multiply this speed with their population.....can you see my concern?

先に書いたように、私はけして彼らを責めもしないし、我々自身楽しんできた物質的豊かさを楽しんではならぬとも言っていない。ただ私が心配するのは、その速度と量にある。それと、どうも彼らは【物質難の時代】からこの時点までに通るべき長ったらしい道を飛び越えてしまったように感じられるのである。まるで小学校から大学に飛び級したように思えるのだ。

こういう風に説明をしてみよう。私が日本を出た１９６４年には殆どの家庭に風呂場や電話などなかった、自家用車など尚更の事である。二十年後に帰ったときに、やっと各家庭に風呂場や電話が取り付けられていた。それから更に十年たって人々は携帯を持てるようになっていた。アメリカでさえ市民が携帯やデジカメを持てるようになったのはこの五年間のことである。
恐らく日本で女子事務員が自分の車を買えるようになるまで【東京オリンピック】から四十年はかかってるのではないかと思う。

一方中国では、サラリーの例をあげたチェングドゥの女子事務員のように、【貧乏時代】から車を買える時点まで、わずか8年で到達している。つまり、物質難の時代から一っ飛びにハイテク時代に突入したのである。このスピードをその人口でかけてみると････私の懸念がお分かりになるだろうか。
