Supermarkets
sell vegetables cheaply
as a way to get customers
to buy expensive meat
and fish (especially sashimi),
basically using them as
※ a “loss leader” to lure you in.
Then, if they get you
as an impulse purchase,
they make their money.
It’s all about the
“loss leader” strategy,
right?
the 🧑🧑🧒 customers
who got 🎣 hooked
by the cheap bait
do the math 🧮 on the TOTAL bill,
and 💸 they end up
walking away with
expensive stuff in their bags. ✊
THAT
is the tactic

goes to the market
early in the morning
to inspect the produce
and pick out the good stuff,
so they have
a tremendous amount
of flexibility.
Big supermarket chains,
on the other hand,
buy huge quantities
of the exact same quality
of produce.
So when it comes to
small lots—
no matter how delicious
something may be—
if there’s only
a tiny amount available,
they won’t even
give it a second look.
That’s why
the people at the market
don’t treat
the little neighborhood stores
with contempt, either.
Those small shops
come in and buy
little bits and pieces,
almost like
little 🧹 cleanup crews
quietly taking care
of whatever is left behind.
So even those tiny buyers
are still treated
with respect.

市場のヒトたちも

邪険にしたり
しないので在る

Something You Can NEVER Get at a Supermarket
First of all,
if you want to get
really delicious produce
at a good price
from a local greengrocer,
you’ve got to
get friendly with the people
who run the shop.
At a greengrocer’s,
the whole way of buying and selling
is basically
closer to a personal deal.
So if you just stand there
and keep your mouth shut,
you’re going to lose out.
The quickest and easiest thing
is to talk to the boss.
🤔 “But what am I supposed to
talk to him about⁉️”

Exactly!
A college-educated young woman
and a greengrocer’s boss
come from completely
different worlds,
culturally speaking.
And I’m NOT talking
about occupational discrimination!
I’m going to tell you
about an actual spectacle
I once witnessed.
The boss had—
※ apparently run off with her.
※ That part is just my imagination. 😂
He had a young wife
who was considerably younger than him,
and she was standing
behind the counter
with a very pregnant belly.
But every time
a pretty young office lady
came into the shop,
the boss would get
that big goofy grin on his face
and start giving her
all kinds of free extras.
And before long,
they’d start arguing
right there in front of the customers!
Because his wife
was one of those tough,
strong-willed,
old-school downtown Tokyo women—
the kind who could
carry a women’s festival float
on her shoulders! 💪😂
So she would get
FURIOUS as a volcano! 🌋
😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🎉
She’d get jealous and yell,
“If you want to give her
THAT much for free,
then just give her
THIS one, and THIS one,
and EVERYTHING ELSE, too!
Go on!
Give it ALL to that woman!”
It was absolutely brutal. 😂
And the boss would even take
something cheap like 🍒 cherries,
which were supposed to be
for customers to sample,
and say,
“They’re sweet and delicious!
Here, open your mouth—
Aaah!” 😋
and actually FEED them to her!
Naturally,
the whole shop would
explode into chaos.
“I’m leaving!”
“We’re through!”
“I’m done with you!”
All this right in front
of the poor young office lady,
who was just standing there
completely dumbfounded.

拘わらず
店先に立って居るのですが
綺麗なOLさんが
来る度に大将が
鼻の下を伸ばして

客前なのに
夫婦喧嘩が
始まっちゃうのです
女神輿を
担ぐやうな
気の強い
下町チャキチャキの
お嫁さんですから

其の女に
呉れてやりゃあ
