An aid-wearing friend informed me that the first rule about hearing aids is, Never leave them where a dog can get at them. Apparently dogs are attracted to the scent of ear wax, and love to chew on hearing aids, a pretty disgusting bit of knowledge. All these years I thought Cappy licked my ears because he loved me. To get Priscilla's attention is tantamount ot hailing a taxi in the rain, as she would rather be gliding down a couturier's runway than punching the parquet at the Pelican.'Steak tartare?' I exclaimed, still in a state of shock. The cuisine at he club is far from haute, and while I don't mind indulging in one of Leroy's thrombotic blue plate specials, I draw the line on courting mad cow disease.Blue-plate specialBlue-plate special or blue plate special is a term used in the United States by restaurants, particularly (but not only) diners. It refers to a specially-low-priced meal, usually changing daily. It typically consists of a "meat and three" (three vegetables), presented on a single plate, often a divided plate (rather than more elegantly on separate dishes). The term was very common from the 1920s through the 1950s. As of 2007 there are still a few restaurants and diners that offer blue-plate specials under that name, sometimes on blue plates, but it is a vanishing tradition. The phrase itself, however, is still a common American colloquial expression. ここには一部しか引用しなかったが、引用しなかった部分も非常に興味深い。

'Father had a problem getting his Lexus out of the garage this morning?' I directed this at Jamie. He nodded without taking his eyes from his newspaper. So taciturn is Jamie that in his presence a clam appears vebose.Habitually untalkative. See Synonyms at silent. [French taciturne, from Old French, from Latin taciturnus, from tacitus, silent; see tacit.] Synonyms: silent, reticent, reserved, taciturn, laconic, secretive, uncommunicative, tightlippedThese adjectives describe people who are sparing with speech. Silent often implies a habitual disinclination to speak or to speak out: "The coroner was a very silent man" (Mary Roberts Rinehart). The term may also mean refraining from speech, as out of fear or confusion: "The person in custody must, prior to interrogation, be clearly informed that he has the right to remain silent" (Earl Warren).Reticent suggests a reluctance to share one's thoughts and feelings: "She had been shy and reticent with me, and now . . . she was telling me aloud the secrets of her inmost heart" (W.H. Hudson).Reserved suggests aloofness and reticence: "a reserved man, whose inner life was intense and sufficient to him" (Arnold Bennett).Taciturn implies unsociableness and a tendency to speak only when it is absolutely necessary: "At the Council board he was taciturn; and in the House of Lords he never opened his lips" (Thomas Macaulay).Laconic denotes terseness or conciseness in expression, but when applied to people it often implies an unwillingness to use words: "Mountain dwellers and mountain lovers are a laconic tribe. They know the futility of words" (Edna Ferber).Secretive implies a lack of openness about or even concealment of matters that could in all conscience be discussed: was secretive about my vacation plans.Uncommunicative suggests a disposition to withhold opinions, feelings, or knowledge from others: an uncommunicative witness.Tightlipped strongly implies a steadfast unwillingness to divulge information being sought: remained tightlipped when asked about her personal life. (The Daily Book of Positive Quotations)The main dangers in this life are the people who want to change everything or nothing. (Lady Nancy Astor)Estreme revolutionaries want to change everything. They see nothing of value worth preserving. Extreme conservatives resist change of any kind. They believe that things are just the way they should be.Neither extreme is realistic or productive. It's impossible to freeze the world exactly as it is for any length of time. And eve if we could prevent change, the result would be stifling. On the other hand, as much as we might want to change everything about our lives and start fresh, we would still be who we are - flaws and all. Better to look for those things in our life that are worth preserving and to build on them.Change is always happening, and I can embrace it rather than resist or ignore it.

Others have seen what is an asked why. I have seen wat could be and asked why not. (Robert F. Kennedy)The first step to accomplishing any task is believing that we can. We begin with this belief and then figure out what we need to do to complete the task. But believing in our ability to accomplish something sometimes requires considerable will. For one reason or another, there may be many voices telling us we can't or shouldn't attempt a particular task. If we listen to these voices, we have failed before we even try.I will believe in my ability to do what needs to be done, and I will figure out a way to do it.(The Daily Book of Positive Quotations)

Objects of the World Today I realize that accumulating things does not increase my happiness. The objects and activities of the world have only so much to give me and cannot, in and of themselves, bring happiness. As all great religions and philosophies say, happiness lies within. It is the freedom and wisdom with which I move through my life, order my day and look upon the people, places and things close to me that influence the quality of my experience. It is not what I have in my life, but how I feel about what I have that makes the difference. If I own lots of things in such a way they also own me, I lose my capacity to enjoy them. If, on the other hand, I see them for what they can and cannot give me, I am free to enjoy them.[Daily Affirmations for Forgiving and Moving On, Tian Dayton]

... the head of McNally & Son reveled in this charage like a ham playing to the balcony. And, alas, so did I - proving once again that bird dip does not fall far from the carrier pigeon.意味は明白だが、何か下地になるっているようなことわざとかがあるのかどうかわからない。ちょっと調べてみたがそれらしいものは見つからない。ネットで検索してもヒットしない。
