That’s the definition Avalanche provides in its docs. However, for the less technical-savvy like me, subnets can be defined as “custom blockchains” you can build on top of Avalanche’s primary network.

According to Avalanche Explorer , there are currently 23 subnets running, including DeFi Kingdoms, Swimmer Network, and Crabada. In other words, all these games and applications are running their own blockchain on Avalanche.

Stacks is another L1 chain with a unique consensus mechanism: proof-of-transfer or PoX. PoX consists of nodes bidding BTC to be elected as the next validator.

As a result, Stacks’ transactions are validated through settlement on the Bitcoin blockchain. In other words, PoX leverages Bitcoin’s proof-of-work consensus mechanism to secure its own network. In turn, it also benefits the STX token holders by distributing the BTC bids to stackers.
