Some games are remembered for their graphics.

Others are remembered for the adventure.

And then there are games that become part of gaming history.

Today, we’re looking back at FINAL FANTASY III on the original Japanese Famicom .

Released by Square in Japan in 1990, FINAL FANTASY III introduced a flexible Job System , allowing characters to change their roles and abilities throughout the adventure.

🎮 A Japanese Famicom Classic

FINAL FANTASY III

  • Year: 1990
  • Developer: Square
  • Publisher: Square
  • Genre: RPG
  • Region: Japan
  • Platform: Nintendo Family Computer / Famicom

The original Famicom version has a very distinctive visual style.

Compared with later remakes and modern versions, the original 8-bit presentation gives the game a completely different atmosphere.

For retro game collectors, this is also a piece of Japanese gaming history that can be experienced through the original hardware and cartridge.

⚔️ The Job System

One of the most important features of FINAL FANTASY III is its Job System .

Characters can change jobs and take on different roles in battle. Jobs include classes such as White Mage, Black Mage, Warrior, Monk, Dragoon and more .

This means that party building isn’t simply about increasing levels.

You can experiment with different combinations and change how your party approaches battles.

That idea became an important part of the FINAL FANTASY series.

🔄 Changing Jobs

One of the moments I wanted to capture in this video was the transition from managing equipment to changing jobs .

This is one of the things that makes the original Famicom version interesting to experience today.

You’re not just watching the characters become stronger.

You’re deciding what kind of characters they will become .

✈️ Taking to the Skies

And then there is one of the classic RPG experiences:

the airship.

Moving from walking across the world to travelling by airship gives the adventure a completely different sense of scale.

For a 1990 Famicom RPG, these moments are part of what makes FINAL FANTASY III feel like a large-scale adventure.

✨ Magic and Battle

Magic is another important part of the party system.

In this footage, you can see the party preparing magic and a White Mage using a spell.

The combination of jobs, equipment and magic gives the player plenty of ways to experiment with the party.

💾 The Original Japanese Famicom Cartridge

And this is the actual cartridge used for this video.

The cartridge itself is part of what makes collecting Japanese retro games so interesting.

It’s not just the game data.

It’s the physical object from the original era — the label, cartridge design and the history attached to it.

For JP RETRO GAMES , this is what I want to share:

Japanese Famicom games from Japan to the world.

🇯🇵 Why the Japanese Version Is Interesting

There is an important point for international fans.

The original Famicom FINAL FANTASY III was released in Japan in 1990 and was not originally released overseas in that form. Later versions and remakes brought the game to international audiences.

So when you see this cartridge, you’re looking at the original Japanese Famicom release , not simply another version of the game.

And that’s exactly what makes Japanese retro gaming fascinating.

This is how FINAL FANTASY III looked and felt on the Japanese Famicom.

Have you ever played the original Famicom version?

And if you could choose one Job for your party, which would you choose?

White Mage? Black Mage? Warrior? Monk?

Let me know. 👇
