DESERVE 「よくやった」
と 「ざまあみろ」
to deserve:
英和辞書には
１． ～を受けるに足る
２． ～されるだけの価値がある
３． ～する価値がある
とあり、例文も載っているのだが、なんだかすっきりしない。
私も be worth～ とどう違うのだろうと思っていた。
話は少しずれるが、単語や表現、文法もアメリカの留学時代に覚えたものには、その覚えた瞬間の場所、人、状況もすべて40年たった今も覚えている。
この to deserve
A: I finally finished the paper and got ‘A’ for it.
B: You deserve it. I know you were working really hard on it.
この場合は 「よくやった」 であり、
A: Tom got gonorrhea. *淋病
He deserves it. He goes to G Street a lot and buys whores there. *娼婦 And he is an asshole.
この場合は間違いなく 「ざまあみろ」 である。
ちなみにG Streetとは私が住んでいたFresno, CAの南に位置するghettoでありdrug dealing, prostitution, murderなど何でもありの地域であり、いたって健康的かつ清潔な Toshiya などは 側も通らなかった。
Fresnoはこの地域のDrug にかかわるBlack on Blackの殺人事件数のせいで、 殺人率が全米1位 になったこともある。
deserve～ は、後ろが 名詞 または to不定詞 であり
deserves Academy Award.
The movie deserves to win Academy Award.
となる。
は 後ろが 名詞 または 動名詞 であり
The movie is worth ￥1,800 .
The movie is worth watching at the theater and paying ￥1,800.
ふたつの違いを説明するよりも、次の例文を読んでもらったほうが理解が早いと思う。
I believe I desrve higher pay at the company working that hard.
But the president gave me a banana as a bonus yesterday, which is worth nothing but a bad joke.
It’ s not worth working for the company.
I think I should quit and find a better job.
I deserve to work at a better place and t o make more money.
いかがであろう。
まずは 「よくやった」 と 「ざまあみろ」 を使ってみてほしい。
