According to the Hale vice-manager, the surveillance of a sensor is continued from the time of cryogenic temperature fuel pouring of the predawn on the 26th, an examination signal is sent just before a launch, and a reaction is seen. The wiring which leads to the sensor which incorrect-operated is switched to the normal sensor, and since whether it is the problem of wiring and whether it is the problem of an electric device can distinguish if abnormalities recur, it is supposed that launching after carrying out an additional examination is possible. finally a cause should narrow down -- although a possibility that there was nothing also remained, when, as for NASA, it turned out that this incorrect operation does not influence others, it was judged that safety was maintained.
野口聡一さん（４０）が乗る米スペースシャトル「ディスカバリー」について、米航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）は２４日（日本時間２５日）技術部門の責任者会議を開き、残量センサー４個のうち１個に異常が再発しても、他のセンサーや装置に影響がないことがはっきりすれば、打ち上げることを決めた。
４個すべてが正常でないと打ち上げられない規則になっているが、会見したヘール・シャトル計画副部長は「規則自体を変更するわけではない」と述べ、今回は例外的な措置であることを強調した。
問題のセンサーは、シャトルの燃料の液体水素がなくなりそうになるのを検知して主エンジンの異常燃焼を防ぐ。１３日に１個が誤作動し、打ち上げが直前で延期された。センサーのうち２個が働けば機能上は問題ないが、打ち上げ直後に爆発した１９８６年のチャレンジャー事故後、４個とも異常がないことを確認する規則になった。
ディスカバリーは２６日午前１０時３９分（日本時間同日午後１１時３９分）打ち上げの予定。ヘール副部長によると、２６日未明の極低温燃料注入の時点からセンサーの監視を続け、打ち上げ直前まで試験信号を送って反応を見る。
誤作動したセンサーにつながる配線を、正常なセンサーにつなぎ替えており、異常が再発すれば配線の問題なのか電子機器の問題なのかが判別できるため、追加試験を実施した上で打ち上げることが可能だとしている。最終的に原因が絞り込めない可能性も残るが、ＮＡＳＡはこの誤作動が他に影響しないことが分かれば安全性は保たれると判断した。
