This is the first book of well known "the medical examiner" series.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Virginia's chef medical examiner, tries to find the strangler of young women within the battle with chauvinist officers. The difficult relation ship with the chauvinist police officer is well described and scientific approach to nail the culprit was exciting.

To tell the truth, I have already read this book in Japanese about 10years a go. I think couple of latest books of the series are less interesting, but this first one is entertaining in every sense of the word.
Nevertheless, after reading the "Lincoln Rhyme" series of Jeffery Deaver, the forensic methods of this book is rather obsolete.
