In year 2003, Vanuatu, the small islands-country decided to file a suit against the US for causing global warming. Their land is threatened to be submerged under water by rising sea-level from global warming.
But the suit was never filed and this is the story what went behind the case.
(Review) Michael Crichton is famous by Jurassic Park or, recently, ER. I love his way of mixing scientific knowledge to fiction and have read several books.
This was quite exciting story because the main scientific theme was Global Warming, which is much of my concern. In the book, he repeatedly tells that there is no distinct data to prove the global warming to be true, and that the Global Warming is just another subject of fear for lobbyists and scientists to gather more funds. In the midst of these business, I was feeling the same greediness and to read his clear definition was quite agreeable.
Another issue of the book is the existence of environmental terrorists. They try to cause various kinds of environmental disasters to realize the global warming to ease the fund raising. The most important disaster they intended was tsunami! This book was published just before the Asian Tsunami in 2004, and I was astonished by the conscience and the picture of disaster flashed back many times through reading the book.
Nevertheless, true or not, I would like to believe that there is a threat of global warming and I would like to live environmental friendly life.
