妻はタイガーウッズを救済ではなく、襲撃した事件だったようですね。

Turnpike Turkey/ turnpikeのこと /turkeyと感謝祭

2009/11/21(土)昨日の昼のBSのCNN student newsでTurnpike Turkeyという見出しが出ていて、なんだろうと思いきや、アメリカの高速道路の料金所付近で七面鳥がうろうろしててその光景が全米に報道されたもの。------------------------Turnpikeとはアメリカの高速道路でしょうか。元々は14世紀のイギリス時代の有料道路の料金所が語源。イギリスでは高速道路はmotorway。ついでにイギリスでは交差点でぐるぐる回るroundabout(発音はラウンダバウト)が今でもいっぱいあります。昔、馬車がぐるぐる回って方向転換。(イギリスでは右側から来る車、馬優先、時計回り。フランスでは左から来る車優先で時計の反対回り)。イギリスでは(自動車道路、一般道路の)交差点に信号機(traffic light)が15個近く設置されてます。停電でも昔のルール適用で全く問題なく車は流れていきます。イギリスでsignalとは鉄道の踏切の信号機。(英辞郎は不正確な解説です）このTurnpikeという名前。イギリスではパブの名前でよく使われます。----------------------------------------turkey 【名-1】七面鳥◆【語源】西アフリカのギニアという国のめんどり(hen)とおんどり(cock)はトルコの領土(Turkish dominions)を経て、初めて英国に輸入された。そこから「ターキー」と呼ばれるようになった。（英辞郎の解説なかなかいいね）そして、初めてアメリカ産の鳥が輸入されたとき、見分けがつかなかったので、同じくターキーと呼ばれた。しばらくしてから、やっと2種類の鳥の見分けがつくようになり、名前を呼び分けようということになったが、「ターキー」の名はアフリカ産の鳥ではなくて、間違ってアメリカ産の鳥の方につけられてしまった。・Turkey is a traditional Christmas food in America. シチメンチョウはアメリカでは伝統的なクリスマスの食べ物だ。以下英辞郎から、turkeyの意味よくないですね。覚えておかないととんでもないことになりそう。【名-2】味の悪いもの、質の劣ったもの、役に立たないもの【名-3】（映画・芝居などの）失敗作、駄作【名-4】ばか者、愚か者、あほ、間抜け、能なし、脳たりん---------------------------------------------Tanksgiving Day〈米〉〔この日は七面鳥(turkey)を食べる習慣がある◆【略】T-day ; T-Day〕多くの店が休業する米国の祝日。11月の第4木曜日。(今年は来週の11月26日)この日前後からクリスマス明けの新年早々まで、米国はお祭ムードに包まれ、さまざまな催しやバーゲンなどが開催される。1年のうちで、もっとも太りやすい期間とも言われている〕---------------------------------------↑↑イギリスのバーゲンセールはクリスマス後の12月27日からでしょう。来年１年分のショッピングをここでしちゃいます。来年の春、夏のホリデーはみんなでクリスマスの時期にわいわいやりながら決定して、年内から翌年の１月、２月に申し込む。春にはいい物件はもうない。あとからやってくるのは日本人。彼らに立地が悪く、高額物件を買わせるのが常道。歴史：●感謝祭は、イギリスからマサチューセッツ州のプリマス植民地に移住したピルグリムファーザーズの最初の収穫を記念する行事であると一般的に信じられている。ピルグリムがプリマスに到着した1620年の冬は大変厳しく、大勢の死者を出したが、近隣に居住していたインディアンのワンパノアグ族の助力により生き延びることができた。翌1621年の秋は、とりわけ収穫が多かったため、ピルグリムファーザーズはワンパノアグ族を招待し、神の恵みに感謝して共にご馳走をいただいたことが始まりであるとされる。。●現代の感謝祭では、宗教的な意味合いはかなり弱くなっており、現代アメリカ人の意識の中では、たくさんの親族や友人が集まる大規模な食事会であり、大切な家族行事のひとつと位置づけられている。●特に感謝祭前日と感謝祭の後の最初の日曜日は、空港、高速道路、鉄道などの交通機関が1年の中でも有数の大混雑・大渋滞となるそうです。

アメリカの「ゴキブリレース」を英語で言うと。。。

2009年11月11日(水) 午後3時半ごろのBSの海外報道ニュースでアメリカで開催されたゴキブリレースのことを報道。英語では「Great Bug Race」となってました。アメリカのごきぶりなかなかでかいね。7cmから8cmほどありました。 bugは昆虫の意味。盗聴器、隠しマイクの意味もあります。あとパソコンのプログラムの不具合、ソフトウェアの欠陥の意味もあります。英辞郎で「ごきぶり」を調べると black beetle●blackbeetle●cockie●cockroach●cucaracha〈スペイン語〉●roach●water bug cockroachが頻度が高いように思います。ゴキブリが壁を這っている=A cockroach is crawling on the wall. ゴキブリの出る台所=cockroach-ridden kitchen ゴキブリをつぶす=crush a cockroach ゴキブリ捕獲器=cockroach trap ゴキブリを見て悲鳴を上げる=scream at the sight of a cockroach ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーなめくじを調べたら、英辞郎では項目なしでした。スペインのなめくじはトウモロコシサイズ。でっかいのが庭にうようよいたよ。
