It's a light and tumble journey
From the East Side to the park;
Just a fine and fancy ramble
To the zoo.
But you can take the crosstown bus
And the animals will love it

It's all happening at the zoo.
The monkeys stand for honesty,
Giraffes are insincere,
And the elephants are kindly but
They're dumb.
Orangutans are skeptical
Of changes in their cages,
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum.
Antelopes are missionaries,
Pigeons plot in secrecy,
And hamsters turn on frequently.
What a gas! You gotta come and see
At the zoo.
いつもは子供の場所だが、冬の昼間は、行き場のない人間に優しい。
井の頭公園に敷設された動物園はとってつけたような小さい動物園だ。
象は神経症のように首を振り続けている。
私は留年し、私の傍らに座っている友人の女性は大学院の壁につきあたり、僕に愛ではなく癒しを求めていた。
のちのち、このズレが僕の苦しみになっていくのだが、
灰色の動物園に二人だけという体験は、延々と続く白黒フィルムのような
実生活ではなく、虚の世界にはちがいないが、みずみずしく、光につつまれている。その二人でいる時間は間違って落ちてきた休暇だったのだ。
バックに流れる曲は、この曲しかありえない。
