アメリカで白人の警官が窃盗容疑の黒人の若者を射殺し、人種差別として、抗議のデモが起こった。先日裁判所(大陪審)の判決が出て、この警官が無起訴になり、デモがさらに過激となって、全米に広がっているようだ。人種差別は勿論法律で禁じられている。しかしいろんな統計から、白人と黒人をはじめとする少数民族との経済や教育の格差は鮮明である。

現在アメリカでは人種差別的な発言や行動をする人は少ないが,心の中には無意識の人種差別があるようで、こちらの方がより深刻だということだ。自分は偏見がないと思っているからより治りにくいということだろう。例えば有色人種と一緒に住むのはいやだと言う白人はいないが、治安や教育、環境を理由にして別の場所に住んでいるという。

人間は生まれて3か月になるともう同じ民族の人を求めるということで、原始時代はそれで異民族から身を守ったのだと思われる。どうも人種差別は人間の本質のようで、これからますます国際化してゆく中で民族問題がいろんな形で表れてきそうである。

There were big rallies against fatal shooting of black teenger suspected of drug store theft by a white police officer in US. Recently the grand jury decided that the officer was not indited. Protest against this decision spread throughout US. Demonstrators accuse grand jury's decision of being racially biased. Of course in US today racial segregation is the breach of the constitution. But many statistics show obvious disparaity between white and minority people.

Now very few Americans speak or act racially, but they are unconsciously biased. They say unconsious bias is more serious than overt one, because people don't notice it by themselves. Instead of saying they don't like to live with minority people, they cite safety, education and environment problems as reasons for living at separate districts.

Scientific research shows that baby starts prefering to be around with peolple of their own race at 3 months old. In olden time human being might have survived racial conflicts by the help of this subconscious racism. So we are biased by nature. In coming global society it is very likely that we will face tough racial problems.
