Performance

There may only be one engine available for the 2013 Hyundai Elantra, but it is pretty solid, and will more than satisfy most drivers. This front-wheel drive vehicle is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder paired to a six-speed manual transmission. It offers 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. Although it is a little slower than others in this segment, taking 9.4 seconds to reach 60 mph, fuel economy is exceptional at 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Those are impressive numbers for a non-hybrid vehicle. A six-speed automatic transmission is also available. It should be noted that those purchasing an Elantrain California receive a partial zero-emissions vehicle, which decreases output numbers to 145 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque. As far as driving is concerned it is nothing to get overly excited about, but for an economy car it is hard to complain. The automatic transmission does shift smoothly and the engine provides enough pep for either city driving or a long commute. However, there is nothing about driving Elantrathat screams fun. The cabin can get a little loud too from wind, road, and engine noise.

Technology

• Audio - The base six-speaker system with iPod interface, CD player, auxiliary jack, and satellite radio is pretty impressive, but there is an upgraded sound system available as well. For 2013, Hyundai also improved screen design, enhanced voice recognition, and added a -Jukebox- feature.
• Navigation - The available in-dash navigation system utilizes a seven-inch display and interactive touchscreen. You can get everything from directions to gas station and ATM locations to current sport scores on it.
• Bluetooth - Voice-recognition control gives you 100 percent hands-free access to your phone to send, end, and receive calls.
• Proximity Key - As long as you have your key fob on you, Elantrawill unlock your doors and let you start the engine with a push of a button.

Safety

The 2013 Hyundai Elantrawas built with safety in mind. In fact, it was awarded a -Top Safety Pick- by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. All models received a -Good -safety rating in roof, front, and side-impact crash tests. It does not disappoint while braking either, stopping from 60 mph in 125 feet. A few safety features include:
• Turn signal mirrors
• Tire pressure monitoring
• Remote anti-theft alarm
• Electronic brakeforce distribution
• Daytime running lamps
• Stability control
• Emergency interior trunk release
• Child seat anchors
• Traction control
• Emergency braking assist
• Rear door safety locks
• Rear-center three-point belt

Appearance

Despite its favorable performance, exceptional fuel economy, and top safety scores, it is often Elantra's Fluidic Sculpture design language that lures people in. Based on appearance you would expect to pay much more. The 2013 Hyundai is available in coupe, sedan, and hatchback, and boasts a substantial wheelbase and wraparound headlights for a sportier profile. The available 17-inch alloy wheels are definitely the perfect finishing touch.

Comfort

Like the exterior, the interior is far nicer than you would expect at this price. It boasts an attractive design with materials that look a little more high-quality than they are. The curved center stack offers a contemporary vibe, and when equipped with some of the available electronics, it looks as pricy as a luxury model. The seats are relatively comfortable and there is an abundance of space in the front row. The back row is not cramped, but taller passengers will struggle to get comfortable.

Cargo

Cargo space does not disappoint either. The sedan offers a very generous 14.8 cubic feet of trunk space. Plus it has a 60/40-split rear seat.
