Louis Renault knew that he wanted to design automobiles and that prompted him to go into business with his brothers Marcel and Fernand. While Louis preferred to work with designs and manufacturing, his brothers had skills and training in running a business. This system worked and the three together created a successful automotive company in 1899. At the time, there were not different body styles on vehicles and the available engines were limited. However, had Louis known what is known now, his goal would have been to create a successful Renault sedan. Fortunately, the company was able to do that several times over the years.

There are a number of Renault sedan vehicles that have been, and still are, successful throughout the years. One such vehicle was based on the Clio when it was first launched in 1999. Taking its cue from the hatchback, the sedan carried many of the same components, features and designs. However, when the second generation hit the market it was designed entirely differently. The Symbol is still sold today but under a variety of names depending on which market it is. Some markets refer to it as the Thalia.

One care that ventured outside of the normal for Renault was the Safrane. This executive car was first debuted in 1992. During its time on the market, the Safrane was the most expensive and luxurious Renault sedan available. It came with a five door liftback version and several features and options. Buyers could choose between front and four wheel drive, manual or automatic transmission and gas or diesel engine. The Safrane was discontinued in 2000.

The Laguna was launched in 1993 as solely a hatchback. Later, they would release a Renault Sedan version of the Laguna. This large family car saw its third generation release in 2007. It wasn't until 2011 when Renault announced that the Laguna would be discontinued. The company needed to cut costs and bring in more profit and eliminating the Safrane was a part of that plan.

The Fluence or Scala is a mid-size Renault sedan that first debuted in 2002 as the Scala and then again in 2009 as the Fluence. Both are also known as the Samsung SM3. The Scala had a total of four versions with a choice of two engines. The Fluence was based on the C Platform and also had two engines with an optional continuously variable transmission.

The Latitude is a Renault sedan that was debuted at the Moscow International Motor Show in 2010. Built on the Nissan D Platform, this large family sedan is also known as the third generation Samsung SM5.

The Renault Sedan has been as varied as the demand. From a compact sedan that meets the needs of the family while still saving on gas to a luxurious model that showcases high style, Renault has made a sedan for nearly everyone in the market for one.
