Sean Payton has found his " Joker ."
The Denver Broncos ' coach repeatedly mentioned this offseason that he wanted to improve the offense with a Joker, which is either a tight end or a running back with elite receiving skills. It's a position Payton filled with various players during his time with the New Orleans Saints , creating mismatches in his offense's favor.
In Denver, Payton will now fill the role with ex- Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Engram Engram. After visiting the Broncos on Monday and the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday , Engram agreed to a two-year deal with Denver on Wednesday, his agent Mike McCartney announced .
The 30-year-old tight end will now provide a big boost to the offense and give young quarterback Bo Nix another weapon. Engram had somewhat of a down year last season (47 catches for 365 yards and one touchdown in nine games) while battling hamstring and labrum injuries. He is healthy now, though, and instantly becomes the team's No. 1 TE.
Through eight seasons in the NFL, Engram has totaled 496 receptions for 4,922 yards and 25 touchdowns. This signing does not necessarily rule out the possibility of the Broncos adding another tight end during the NFL draft in April.
