The North Carolina Tar Heels are just under 24 hours away from continuing their NCAA Tournament run, facing Ole Miss on Friday, March 21 at 4:05 p.m.
11-seed UNC (23-13, 13-7 ACC) enters its Round of 64 battle with plenty of confidence, thanks to a 95-68 obliteration of San Diego State Tuesday night in the First Four. 6-seed Ole Miss (22-11, 10-8 SEC) is one of 14 SEC teams that originally made the NCAA Tournament field.
While North Carolina is currently focused on making a Cinderella run, we can't forget about the future, which includes one of Hubert Davis' greatest recruiting victories.
On Thursday, March 20, Caleb Wilson – a 5-star power forward from Atlanta, Ga. who is ranked ninth nationally and anchors the Tar Heels' 2025 recruiting class – was named one of three finalists for the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Wilson was also named Georgia's Gatorade Player of the Year.
Joining Wilson as finalists are Cameron Boozer, a Duke commit following in his father's footsteps and Brayden Burries, who still has yet to decide his college destination.
This is the second big honor Wilson earned in March alone, with him previously helping Holy Innocents Episcopal School capture a State Championship. Before winning a State Championship, Wilson learned he'll be playing in the McDonalds All-American Game Tuesday, April 1.
Joining Wilson in UNC's 2025 recruiting class are 4-star combo guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis . Wilson will likely start for North Carolina during its 2025-2026 campaign, while Dixon and Denis' roles will be determined by how the Tar Heels' backcourt changes in the offseason.
As UNC advances throughout the NCAA Tournament, you can bet Wilson will be watching his future teammates on TV. Before you know it, Wilson will don the Carolina Blue on game day himself.
