The North Carolina Tar Heels celebrated another dominant victory on the basketball court Wednesday night, dominating rival NC State, 97-73 , to earn a regular season sweep for the second-straight year.
UNC (16-11, 9-6) built a 28-point halftime lead, thanks to a combination of strong shooting and lockdown defense. North Carolina didn't need much to go its way during the second half, but continued playing solid basketball with 43 second-half points.
The Tar Heels rolled with a more traditional 1-5 lineup against the Wolfpack (10-16, 3-12): Ven-Allen Lubin at center, Jae'Lyn Withers at power forward, Drake Powell at small forward, plus Elliot Cadeau and RJ Davis as starting guards. Davis led all scorers with 21 points, while nine UNC players shot over 50 percent.
3-pointers didn't play a major role in North Carolina's victory, but the Tar Heels shot 40% as a team, much-improved from past performances of sub-30%. Cade Tyson nailed two trifectas in tying for the UNC lead with Withers and Jackson, which had to be a major confidence booster for him.
Playing was initially a question when Wednesday began, due to the expected impact of winter weather in Chapel Hill. A couple inches of snow fell and roads became sloppy, changing travel plans for many, but North Carolina made the cool decision to make seating FREE, general admission – outside of those who already purchased tickets. This created for a significantly louder atmosphere, highlighted by students filling the lower bowl.
UNC has an easy four games coming up: Virginia, Florida State , Virginia Tech and Miami. The Tar Heels now have two straight wins: what did social media think?
