Alex Bregman's departure from the Red Sox left a hole in the leadership for 2026. But Alex Cora believes two players could fill that role.
"(Garrett) Crochet and Trevor Story ," the Red Sox manager said on "Foul Territory."
Story is entering his fifth year with the Red Sox and just finished his first healthy year with the team. He played in 157 games in 2025
Cora revealed that while Story isn't much of a vocal leader, he leads by example which players will follow.
"What Trevor did last year, he played (157) games. That says a lot, right?" Cora said . "The way he goes about it, he's not a vocal leader. He's not gonna get in people's faces, but he will show up and prepare. And he's gonna play hard, which is very important."
Story has brought a veteran presence to Boston since he arrived in 2022. But after a fully healthy season and coming into 2026 able to build off that, it should only add to his leadership.
Crochet is coming off his first year with the Red Sox. The ace was the runner-up in American League Cy Young voting and had a league-leading 255 strikeouts.
The 26-year-old hasn't been in the big leagues as long as Story, but proved last year he can lead a rotation and be someone players look up to.
"Having Crochet every five days — that's a leader right there," Cora said . "He's like Randy Johnson back in the day. Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez . Every five days, you know you're gonna have that guy, either he's gonna extend the winning streak or stop the losing streak. And that's a luxury that we have."
