The Bruins could be losing some brainpower from their front office.
Evan Gold has emerged as one of the finalists for the Vancouver Canucks general manager opening, according to multiple reports. Boston 's assistant general manager and director of legal affairs, Gold has been with the Bruins organization since 2015. Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal told SportsNet650 that he believes Gold is "the frontrunner," but no deal is done yet.
"Gold is a candidate that has really impressed since Day 1," Dhaliwal said. "He's a good, young, sharp hockey mind... One agent told me that Gold is a tough negotiator. He's got an analytics background that teams desire, he's good with the salary cap, he's a lawyer... he has learned from the likes of Cam Neely about being the eye-test guy. Making decisions with what you see. Yes, analytics is a part of it, but what you see, the eye test (matters)."
SportsNet's Elliotte Friedman reported that Gold has been to Vancouver to interview in person and believes the process could soon accelerate.
"Evan Gold, who is definitely on their radar and I believe was in there this week to be interviewed, he's done his responsibilities," Friedman said. "I believe he was (in Vancouver) this week and also his team is now out. So if it is going to heat up around him, it's really going to start to heat up around him now."
Canucks assistant general manager Ryan Johnson is also a serious candidate, per Dhaliwal and Friedman.
Current president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford will have a major role in the hiring process before stepping into an advisory role once a decision is made. It's an important spring in Vancouver, as the Canucks own the No. 3 overall pick in next month's NHL Draft.
