Patriots fans quickly got excited about Drake Maye as the team’s next quarterback after he was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Even a down rookie season in which New England finished 4-13 still had fan optimistic about Maye given his growth each week. A year later, Maye is preparing to play in the AFC Championship Game after helping lead the Patriots to a 14-3 record.
After a season in which the fans didn’t have much to cheer about, the quarterback has heard “MVP!” chants and the “playoff roar” during the Patriots’ AFC Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Chargers .
It’s something Maye, who grew up in North Carolina, has come to appreciate — how passionate the fan base not just with the Patriots, but across all major sports.
“I think one of the coolest things about being up here is the fanbase. I grew up in Charlotte, grew up a Panthers fan, we had the Hornets. It’s a different world,” Maye told Tedy Bruschi ahead of New England’s AFC Division game against the Houston Texans . “That’s one of the first things I noticed. It’s all four sports, that’s the coolest thing about New England and the Boston area — the Bruins, the Celtics, the Red Sox. They love sports.
“You kinda say, ‘Hey, the fans around here kinda wait for the playoffs to kinda get loud and get this stadium rocking,’” he continued . “And you saw that last Sunday (against the Chargers).”
Maye heard that excitement once again in Sunday’s win over the Texans that punched New England’s ticket to the AFC Championship Game for the first time since 2019.
The Patriots go on the road to face the Denver Broncos . So while Maye won’t hear the Patriots’ home crowd at Mile High Stadium, he’ll try to give New England fans in attendance and those at home something to cheer even louder about with a trip to Super Bowl LX on the line.
