Bill Belichick believes UNC will play better in Year 2 than it did in Year 1 as the Tar Heels coach.
“It was great, working with a lot of young players. I saw a lot of improvement both off the field and their training, conditioning, strength, explosion, all that,” Belichick said during his appearance on “College Gameday” ahead of Monday’s National Championship Game between Miami and Indiana. “And then on the field in terms of their technique, communication and so forth. We didn’t really have a recruiting class last year, a lot of new players, 70 new players to start the season. This year we’ll be in much better shape in terms of having some continuity and building forward through spring ball. I’m excited about that.”
Belichick’s first year with the Tar Heels ended with a 4-8 record (2-6 ACC). Despite having a slew of success at the NFL level that included six Super Bowls while he was with the New England Patriots , it never quite translated to the college level in his first year.
The 73-year-old’s first season at the helm was also dominated by headlines about his relationship with Jordon Hudson and the role the 24-year-old plays in his professional life.
But Belichick wasted little time in the offseason and made changes to his staff and fired both offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer.
Bobby Petrino will be UNC’s next offensive coordinator as he looks to rebound the offense from 19.3 points per game (119th in the Football Bowl Subdivision) and 288.8 yards per game (129th).
