The Philadelphia Flyers are back in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with help from a former Bruins goalie.
The Flyers were tied with the Carolina Hurricanes after three periods of play. The game went to the shootout when neither team scored in overtime.
Alexander Nikishin needed to score in the fourth round to keep Carolina alive, but he was stopped by Dan Vladar to give Philadelphia the win and a trip to the playoffs.
Vladar raised his arms in celebration before he was mobbed by his teammates in the crease.
“He came from Calgary , I don’t want to say with a chip on his shoulder, but he believed in himself,” Flyers coach Rick Tochett told reporters after the game .
Vladar signed a two-year deal with the Flyers last summer after four seasons with the Calgary Flames . He turned in a career year with a 29-14-7 record. The 28-year-old had a 2.42 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 52 appearances.
Over his last six games, Vladar, a 2015 third-round draft pick by the Bruins , went 5-1-0 with a 1.81 GAA and .921 save percentage.
The Flyers wrap up their regular season on Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens before their first-round matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins .
