For a moment, two separate moments actually, it looked like Toronto was going to give Monday’s game vs. Dallas an honest effort.
They took a lead of 3-0 and then 5-3. But they couldn’t hold either one and fell to the Stars, 6-5 and dropped to 32-35-14. Their .481 points percentage ranks fifth worst in the NHL.

That’s bad news for the Bruins . Toronto is tanking and it’s working. If the Maple Leafs ’ No. 1 draft pick lands outside the top 5, it transfers to Boston as part of the Brandon Carlo trade. If not Toronto keeps it, Boston would get the Maple Leafs’ No. 1 pick in a later year.
Toronto has one game left, Wednesday vs. Ottawa . A win combined with two losses for the Kraken could move them out of the top five.
Ping pong balls will be a factor here too. Obviously, no matter what happens in the final few days of the season, if the Leafs win the NHL Draft lottery, Toronto will moved up into the top three and keep its pick.
If the Leafs finish in the fifth spot, but someone below them wins the lottery and pushes the Leafs back to sixth, Boston would get the pick.
