There was a lot of uproar after it was revealed Bill Belichick would not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer .
Reaction was strong from current and former players, coaches, analysts and media. What drew the ire of many was ESPN reporting former Indianapolis Colts general manager Bill Polian — Belichick’s longtime rival — told voters Belichick should have to “wait a year” as punishment for “Spygate.”
Polian, one of the 50 voters for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, denied the report about an hour after ESPN’s report surfaced in a conversation with SI’s Matt Verderame.
“That’s totally and categorically untrue. I voted for him,” Polian said .
However, in a separate conversation with ESPN’s Don Van Natta , Polian claimed he couldn’t remember if he voted for Belichick, and said he was 95% sure, but couldn’t say with 100% certainty.
Belichick won eight Super Bowls over the course of his 49-year coaching career in the NFL. Six of those came with the New England Patriots as he helped coach the team to two separate dynasties over the course of a historic 23-year run.
Despite the success, which includes 302 regular-season wins, “ Spygate ,” “Deflategate” and “the twin cheating scandals came up in deliberations among voters,” according to ESPN.
Polian was enshrined into Canton in 2015. While he was a six-time Executive of the Year, he only has one Super Bowl to his name.
