Before the Patriots signed veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs in March, the team looked at former backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham for a potential return to New England .
Mike Vrabel told “ The Greg Hill Show ” on WEEI Monday morning that the Patriots “did a lot of work” on Stidham in the offseason while discussing his unexpected AFC Championship start against the Pats Sunday .
Stidham is expected to get the nod for the Denver Broncos after starting quarterback Bo Nix broke his ankle in the team’s AFC divisional round win over the Buffalo Bills . Nix will have surgery on his ankle Tuesday.
The Patriots drafted Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. While he had a chance to take over the starting spot after Tom Brady left the team, he ultimately became the third-string quarterback behind Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer . He moved to backup quarterback at the end of the season, making five appearances for New England.
After he had offseason back surgery in 2021, the Patriots traded Stidham to the Las Vegas Raiders — then coached by Josh McDaniels — in 2022. The Denver Broncos signed Stidham in 2023 and re-signed him to a two-year deal in March of 2025.
“I like Jarrett,” Vrabel said. “He’s probably ready to go and obviously preparing as a starter each and every week.
“(We’re) really early in our preparation and not sure how much things will change based on the quarterback in there and what they’re asking him to do. We’ll just have to get started here today.”
