Former NBA player Ed Davis , the son of Virginia Union basketball legend Terry Davis, has been indicted in connection with an alleged sports gambling scheme that federal prosecutors say involved former Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley manipulating his on-court performance during the 2023-24 NBA season.
According to ESPN, Davis and Beasley are among six defendants named in a federal indictment unsealed Monday in the Eastern District of New York. Prosecutors allege the scheme targeted at least four Bucks games during the 2023-24 season, with Beasley intentionally altering his statistical production so co-conspirators could profit from player prop bets.
The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov first reported news of the indictment Monday morning.
"This morning @TheAthletic we broke that Malik Beasley and Ed Davis, both longtime NBA vets, were indicted on four counts by the DOJ for an alleged sports gambling scheme," Vorkunov wrote on X, linking to extensive reporting published by The Athletic
According to the federal indictment, prosecutors allege Beasley lost millions of dollars gambling during his NBA career and agreed to manipulate his statistics in multiple games while playing for the Bucks. Davis allegedly acted as Beasley's "gatekeeper" throughout the scheme and encouraged him to participate.
"Only way you can beat Vegas is sports betting," Davis allegedly texted Beasley in December 2023, according to the indictment. "We can make some good money."
Federal prosecutors allege the conspirators placed wagers totaling more than $75,000 and generated at least $121,000 in net winnings. The indictment also alleges Beasley received bribes that were frequently used to reduce or pay debts he owed Davis.
Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, disputed the allegations in a statement to ESPN.
"An indictment is not proof of guilt or evidence. It is merely a charge of probable cause," Haney said. "The investigation was a year and a half long and we maintain Malik's innocence of all charges."
The NBA also acknowledged the charges in a statement to ESPN, saying it is reviewing the indictment and cooperating with authorities.
Davis appeared in 11 NBA seasons after being selected with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. Before reaching the professional ranks, he was the son of one of the greatest players in Virginia Union history.
Terry Davis starred for the Panthers from 1985-89, earning CIAA Most Outstanding Player honors in 1989 after averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds during each of his final three collegiate seasons. He helped lead Virginia Union to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances before enjoying a 10-year NBA career with the Miami Heat , Dallas Mavericks , Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets .
