The first big day of the Bruins ' offseason comes Tuesday night.
The NHL will hold its draft lottery, an event that will determine the order of the top 16 picks and whether the Bruins or Maple Leafs will get Toronto’s first-round pick.
The lottery will be at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
Most fans watching any lottery are stuck hoping for a long shot to improve their team’s pick. There’s no single team whose odds of winning the lottery are better than 25.5 percent.
The Bruins are in a better spot. If any of 10 different teams win, they’ll pick sixth or seventh in a deep NHL draft. That has a 58.2 percent chance of happening.
Boston only receives the pick if it falls outside the top five. Toronto had the fifth-worst record in the NHL. They would keep their pick if:
-
They win one of the lottery draws themselves
-
Nobody below them wins one of the lottery draws
-
Washington is the only team below them to win one of the draws. The Capitals are currently 16th and a team can’t rise more than 10 spots.
Boston would get Toronto’s pick if the Leafs don’t win one of the draws and one or more of the following teams do:
-
San Jose
-
Columbus
If the Bruins don’t get the pick this year, things get a little complicated. The wording from the trade is this (from Puckpedia):
“ Top 5 protected, slides to 2027. The 2027 pick goes to Philadelphia (as part of Scott Laughton trade) if it is outside the top 10, which converts this pick to Boston to a 2028 unprotected 1st Round Pick. If this Pick slides to 2027 and is in the top 10, TOR can either transfer it to BOS to satisfy this trade and then give PHI the 2028 unprotected, or transfer it to PHI and give BOS the 2028 unprotected 1st Round Pick. ”
