Last year, the North Carolina schedule didn't seem too bad, but Bill Belichick's team couldn't do much with it. This time around?
Uh oh.
It appears to be a whole lot worse, and it starts with playing eight ACC games, not nine. Why is that a problem? Notre Dame is on the slate.

The Good
There's not much. At least some of the biggest games - Miami, Notre Dame, Louisville - are at home, and five of the last seven games are in the state of North Carolina. However ...
The Bad
Going to Ireland to play TCU isn't a positive. Teams tend to get gassed after making that trip - especially if they lose - and that's one of the easiest games over the first part of the season.
Remembering that Duke is the defending ACC Champion, the first half of the season is an absolute bear.
What ACC Teams North Carolina Will Miss
Boston College, Cal, Florida State, Georgia Tech, SMU, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest.
There's no break here. Not playing Florida State or Georgia Tech isn't bad, and missing SMU isn't an awful thing, but the Tar Heels have to face Miami, Clemson, Louisville, Virginia, NC State, and Duke.
North Carolina's Best and Worst Case Scenarios in 2026
Best Case: WIN THE TCU GAME
The season starts the opposite way from last year, with a great performance in a win over TCU. The Tar Heels are just that good and beat Clemson, get by Pitt and Duke on the road, and at least split the home games against Notre Dame and Miami.
They roll through November - with one big trip somewhere - on the way to an ACC Championship appearance, or ....
Worst Case: UNC loses the TCU game
(Cue the sad trombone.)
TCU beats North Carolina again, the Clemson game is a dud, Notre Dame flexes, and North Carolina is 1-5 to start after struggling on the road against Pitt and Duke.
The rest of the season fizzles from there.

Games That Will Decide North Carolina's Season
1. TCU (in Dublin), Aug. 29.Winning this game would mean absolutely everything to the vibes and momentum around the program.
2. at Duke, Oct. 17.The Tar Heels need revenge after the rough loss last year. With three of the next four games at home - even though one of them will be against Miami - there's a shot to do something good with a rivalry win.
3. NC State, Nov. 28.42-19 - that wasn't okay. North Carolina gets the Wolfpack at home, and it has to win this in the regular season finale.
