FOXBOROUGH – Kyle Williams has showcased two big things during this rookie season.
The young receiver is very, very fast . That’s been evident in his two touchdowns scored. Williams is also patient. The third-round pick has played a reserve role for the Patriots this season.
Although that isn’t easy for a competitor, this Patriots rookie receiver is applauded for being a good teammate while watching other veterans play ahead of him. On Thursday, Patriots receivers coach Todd Downing said he hopes Williams’ attitude stays the same over the course of his NFL career.
“I’m hopeful that never changes because that is such a joy to have around,” Downing said. “To have in the room, to have in my office early every morning, is just awesome to see. He has a passion for the game, and he just loves being around his teammates. I think when you’re excited for somebody else, it’s really hard to be upset about what you aren’t getting. That’s where Kyle’s at right now.
“He’s so joyful for those around him that he’s just staying in tune to the game and learning. And then when his number’s called, he’s done some nice things.”
Williams hasn’t had many opportunities this season, but the first-year player is showing growth.
Over the first nine games, Williams caught two passes on six targets for 20 yards. Over the last four games, the rookie has three catches on seven targets for 123 yards. Although he doesn’t have a game with multiple receptions this season, he’s shown the ability to make big plays to help the Patriots’ offense.
That was seen in Tampa Bay when Williams caught a 72-yard touchdown pass from Drake Maye . As soon as the rookie caught the ball, he took off and showcased an elite burst of speed.
That was similar in the Patriots’ last game against the New York Giants . In this matchup, Williams beat the cornerback in front of him, and Maye hit him for a 33-yard touchdown pass.
Williams’ game-changing burst of speed is one reason why the Patriots drafted him in the third round with pick No. 69. Downing said it’s up to Williams to develop other parts of his game while playing that fast.
“I think he’s got an elite trait with his speed,” Downing said. “I think that as he continues to grow and get more comfortable with the entire route tree and coverages and things of that nature, the challenge is, can you play that fast all the time? I think he’s growing in that, and I think that that’s something he’s very aware of and works hard at and excited to see his future there.”
