The Chicago Cubs are red hot. On Monday, they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 with Michael Conforto hitting a walk-off homer and leading the Cubs to their 12th straight win at Wrigley Field, the longest win streak since 2008.
At the time, the Cubs went on a 14-game winning streak at the friendly confines. Meanwhile, the Cubs have won their sixth straight game.
Conforto came in as a pinch hitter for Matt Shaw with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning.
After the game, CF Pete Crow-Armstrong , who went 1-for-4, was celebratory in Conforto's heroics, per Marquee Sports Network.
"I think it is super cool when somebody can end a baseball game in that sort of way after having to be ready each time that there may be a pinch-hit opportunity," he said.
In the 9th inning, the Cubs trailed 4-3. They faced Reds closer Emilio Pagán when manager Craig Counsell selected Conforto to pinch hit. On a 3-2 count, Pagan threw Conforto a 94 mph fastball. He hit the ball 405 feet into the left centerfield stands.
Conforto hit his first home run with the Cubs, and his first career walk-off home run. It is also the second impactful pinch-hit home run for Chicago. On April 18, Carson Kelly came to bat for Moisés Ballesteros and hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning against the New York Mets .
The Cubs went on to win 4-2.
Chicago is now 23-12 and has a 1.5 lead over the Reds in the National League Central.
