Phillies rumors: Alex Cora expected to ultimately be manager despite initial rejection appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The Philadelphia Phillies made big news in Major League Baseball earlier this season, when the club fired manager Rob Thomson. The Phillies then swung for the fences, by trying to hire Alex Cora as their manager. Cora had been fired by the Boston Red Sox .
While Cora ultimately said no to the Phillies, a new report suggests it is only a matter of time before the club hires Cora.
“While Alex Cora will be the hottest free-agent commodity this winter, the Phillies are confident that he will be managing their team in 2027. Cora also is expected to be wooed by the Houston Astros and New York Mets ,” USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale wrote for the outlet on Sunday.
The Phillies are currently led by interim manager Don Mattingly, who is off to a strong start . Philadelphia had made it pretty clear that Mattingly wasn’t going to be considered a fit for the job long-term.
Cora has a relationship with Phillies president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski. The two worked together in Boston at one point. Dombrowski made it clear he wanted Cora to replace Thomson.
Time will tell if Cora does indeed take the Philadelphia job at some point.
Phillies are battling to stay relevant this MLB season
Philadelphia is trying to climb back in the National League East standings this season. The team had suffered a brutal 10-game losing streak when Thomson was still in charge.
Mattingly got out to a hot start , going 4-0 in his first four games. The team dropped a game Saturday though against the Miami Marlins , 4-0. It was the interim manager’s first defeat.
Philadelphia hopes the wins keep coming. The Phillies were expected by many to win the NL East this season, but that is already in jeopardy. The club is already 10.5 games behind Atlanta in the division.
The Phillies are now 13-20 on the season. Philadelphia goes for another win against the Marlins on Sunday.
