The Red Sox still have work to do when it comes to free agency and remain engaged with two free agents.
Boston , along with the Chicago Cubs , are among the two teams talking to both Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette , according to The Athletic .
This latest update comes after ESPN reported the Red Sox have “ signaled a willingness to pay ” Bregman “big money.” Buster Olney floated a six-year, $171.5 million deal — similar to the one the Detroit Tigers offered Bregman last season before he ultimately signed with the Red Sox.
Sources told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo over the weekend that the Red Sox remain engaged with Bregman and his agents, but they’re also assessing others like Bichette .
At 31, Bregman expressed the desire for his next contract to bring him to the end — or at least close to — the end of his career. Whether the Red Sox want to commit term and money to the third baseman will depend on their willingness to spend potentially past the second CBT (competitive balance tax) of $264 million.
The 27-year-old Bichette fits what the Red Sox are looking for: A right-handed bat who can play shortstop, second base and third base. Boston has a shortstop in Trevor Story , but it’s unclear if Bregman will return to the Red Sox. Should Bregman leave, Marcelo Mayer is an option to take over third. He can also play second.
Bichette batted .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI in 139 games for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025.
The Cubs, meanwhile, want to upgrade their third base position. Bregman would certainly fill that role, while Bichette would give them flexibility at shortstop and second base.
