MINNEAPOLIS — Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras exited Tuesday’s game against the Twins in the fifth inning because of low back tightness.
Contreras went 0 for 1 with a strikeout and hit by pitch. Andruw Monasterio replaced him at first base to begin the bottom of the fifth inning.
The 33-year-old slugger is batting .298 with a .444 on-base percentage, .491 slugging percentage, .935 OPS, three home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs, 11 walks and 19 strikeouts in 17 games (72 plate appearances).
He has provided elite defense at first base so far, ranking in the 99th percentile in outs above average (3).
The hit by pitch appears unrelated. Twins starting pitcher Mick Abel hit him with a 92.7 mph sinker on the elbow guard during the fourth inning.
He remained in the game and played first base in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Red Sox trail the Twins 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning here at Target Field.
