BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ' 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday at Fenway Park:
1. The Red Sox blew an early 3-0 lead after blowing an early 4-0 lead Sunday. Boston dropped to 2-8 while the Brewers improved to 8-2.
2.Left fielder Roman Anthony 's arm strength and accuracy have been issues early this season and he's been working with outfield instructor Kyle Hudson on his footwork to improve his throwing. He had another bad throw on Garrett Mitchell 's 217-foot RBI single off Garrett Whitlock in the eighth inning. It tailed far to the third base side of home plate and rolled to the backstop. Brice Turang scored easily from second base to make it 6-5 Milwaukee.
Christian Yelich also scored all the way from first base on the throwing error, making it 7-5.
3.It was another ugly game for Boston's pitching and defense. Red Sox pitchers walked eight batters, including forcing in a run with the bases loaded. Two errors also led to two unearned runs.
4.Red Sox starter Brayan Bello had a weird outing with 12 swings and misses through two innings and 16 through three innings.
But he threw just 58% strikes and walked four batters, resulting in manager Alex Cora pulling him after 3 ⅓ innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) and five hits. He struck out five.
He finished with 17 swings and misses: 10 with his cutter, five with his changeup and two with his sweeper.
5. Cora moved Trevor Story from the No. 2 spot in the batting order to fifth . Story, who entered batting .119 (5 for 42), stroked an RBI single with two outs in the first inning to put Boston ahead 1-0. He also hit an RBI sac fly in the third to make it 3-0.
6.Story's RBI single in the first inning was blooped 206 feet into right field. It left his bat at 73.4 mph.
Cora had coincidentally discussed the balance between process vs. results during his pregame media availability.
"Mikey Lowell used to say, 'Give me the 3 for 4 with three bloop singles instead of the 0 for 4 with the four rockets,'" Cora recalled. "The mental skills coach is telling you, 'Stay with the process. Just hit the ball hard. That's what you want to do. You go 0 for 4 with three rockets, that's a good day.' Mikey's like, 'Nah, nah, nah. Give me the three bloop singles. That's a great day.'"
7.The Brewers' four-run fourth was an ugly inning for Red Sox pitching and defense. All three hits were infield singles. The inning featured an error by third baseman Caleb Durbin and two walks, including reliever Danny Coulombe walking in a run.
8.Lefty reliever Jovani Morán pitched well, allowing one run, one hit and one walk while striking out four in three innings.
9.First baseman Willson Contreras had an eventful game. After Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff hit him with a pitch in the third inning, Contreras was visibly angry. Moments later, he slid hard into second base to break up a potential double play. Defensively, he made a terrific diving play on Jake Bauers ' 97.4 mph ground ball hit down the line. He stood and ran to step on the bag to record the out unassisted.
10.Contreras also homered in the ninth inning. He reached base five times, tying a career-high.
11.Boston's first two hitters reached in the seventh with Masataka Yoshida walking and Contreras singling. But reliever Aaron Ashby then got Wilyer Abreu , Story and Andruw Monasterio to fly out.
12.It will be a battle of aces Tuesday in the second game of the series. Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet (1-1, 3.27 ERA) will start opposite Brewers righty Jacob Misiorowski (1-0, 2.45 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
