BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ' 3-2 loss to the Padres at Fenway Park on Saturday:
1.The Red Sox dropped to 2-6 while the Padres improved to 3-5.
2.Boston tied the game in the eighth. Ceddanne Rafaela began the inning by beating out a slow ground ball to shortstop. Roman Anthony followed with a sharp single to right field.
With one out, manager Alex Cora used Andruw Monasterio as a pinch hitter for Jarren Duran . Monasterio grounded to pitcher Adrian Morejon who fired to second baseman Jake Cronenworth to try to begin a 1-4-3 double play to end the inning. But the ball bounced out of Cronenworth’s glove. Cronenworth picked up the ball, tagged second base for the second out but his throw to first base was too late and Rafaela scored from third base.
3.Cora forfeited the DH spot in the ninth inning for a better defensive alignment. After Monasterio pinch hit for left fielder Jarren Duran in the bottom of the eighth, Cora moved Anthony from the DH spot to left field. He could have left Anthony as the DH and put Masataka Yoshida in left field.
4.With two outs in the ninth, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela seemed to misread Fernando Tatis Jr. ’s double. Rafaela initially moved in, and the ball sailed over his head for a 113.5 mph, 371-foot double. It had a 60% catch probability.
Ramón Laureano then hit the go-ahed RBI single to left field.
Tatis beat Anthony’s throw to home plate, making it 3-2.
5.Red Sox starter Connelly Early struggled with his command. He pitched four innings and allowed two runs, three hits and four walks while striking out four. He threw 88 pitches, landing 60.2% for strikes.
Bryce Johnson ’s RBI groundout off Early in the second inning made it 1-0 Padres. Freddy Fermin ’s RBI double in the third inning made it 2-1 San Diego .
Early induced 11 swings and misses with five against his changeup. His fastball topped out at 94.8 mph and averaged 93.0 mph.
6. Marcelo Mayer tied the game 1-1 in the second inning on a 360-foot sacrifice fly to center field.
7. Willson Contreras ripped a 368-foot line drive that left his bat at 104.2 mph. It had a .660 expected batting average but Fernando Tatis Jr. ran it down for the second out of the sixth inning.
8. Trevor Story continues to struggle. He had a chance to tie it in the fifth inning after Roman Anthony tripled with two outs. But Story grounded out to second base to end the inning. He had another chance to tie it in the eighth inning with runners at first and third with no outs. But he struck out swinging, chasing a slider outside of the strike zone.
9.The Red Sox and Padres will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Lefty Ranger Suárez (0-1, 8.31 ERA) will start opposite Padres righty Walker Buehler (0-1, 6.75 ERA).
