MINNEAPOLIS — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ’ 13-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Monday:
1.The Red Sox dropped to 6-10 while the Twins improved to 10-7.
2.Starter Garrett Crochet had the worst start of his MLB career. He allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on nine hits, two home runs and three walks in 1 ⅔ innings. He threw 55 pitches (31 in the first inning alone) and recorded just three swings and misses.
3.Crochet’s 13 four-seam fastballs averaged 94.9 mph, down from his 96.1 mph yearly average. The spin on all his pitches was down. His cutter, for example, averaged 2,510 revolutions per minute, a decrease from his 2,629 RPM season average.
4.It marked the second shortest start of Crochet’s career, behind only a rain-shortened start Aug. 27, 2024 with the White Sox against Texas . He threw just four pitches in that game without recording an out before a 1 hour, 29 minute rain delay. He entered having pitched at least five innings in 34 of his 35 starts with Boston . His previous shortest start with the club came Aug. 11, 2025, at Houston when he allowed five runs in four innings.
5.It marked Crochet’s first appearance without a strikeout since a relief outing for the White Sox against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 27, 2023 (excluding his rain-shortened start in 2024).
6.A defensive miscue by Trevor Story compounded Crochet’s struggles in the first inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Story dived for a ball hit to his left. He fielded the ball and tried to flip it to second base from his glove but an errant throw allowed two runs to score, making it 4-0 Twins.
7.Story followed up a four-hit game Sunday with an RBI single in this one. He went 1 for 3 and has at least one hit in six of his past eight games.
8. Jarren Duran belted his first home run of the season, a 112.2 mph, 424-foot blast to right-center field.
9. Caleb Durbin went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Wilyer Abreu went 2 for 3 with a walk and one RBI.
10. Jovani Morán and Tyler Samaniego each threw two scoreless innings of relief.
11.The Red Sox and Twins will play the second game of their three-game series Tuesday at 7:40 p.m. ET. Right-hander Sonny Gray (2-0, 2.76 ERA) will start for Boston opposite Minnesota righty Mick Abel (0-2, 6.08 ERA).
