Garrett Crochet had the worst outing of his career Monday night. The Red Sox ace was chased from Boston’s 13-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins in the second inning after he gave up 10 earned runs on nine hits.
Aside from the ugly outing, former MLB ace and current FOX Sports 1 analyst Dontrelle Willis wasn’t happy with how Crochet came off the mound.
“Not only does he come out of the game short, but now you put the bullpen taxed,” he said . “His body language, being the captain and the leader in that locker room, was very poor coming off that mound. Put a ton of pressure on the offense.”
The offense ended up scoring six runs, but the game was too far out of reach by the time Alex Cora came in to take Crochet out.
Crochet couldn’t get anything going. The lefty’s velocity was down and he was unable to locate his pitches. The Red Sox used three relievers in the process in the first of a three-game series.
“The velocity was not there. The command was not there. You have a bunch of guys already that are struggling, hitting below the Mendoza Line,” Willis said . “All of these guys that need to play better. You needed your ace to step up in a big game.”
Crochet confirmed he was healthy but was unsure what led to the disastrous start.
“In the second inning, I felt like I was throwing the ball better and the results were worse,” Crochet said. “I don’t really have one thing to point to. I just feel like they had a good approach. It was all pitch types that I felt like they were absolutely smothering — and laying off the sweeper. So there was really no point for me to even throw it (the sweeper). I wasn’t getting to kill counts. So it was just three variations of hard. That’s my game. That’s how I pitch. And tip your cap, they hit them all."
