TORONTO — Red Sox pitching prospect Jake Bennett was scratched from his start with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old left-hander is on the 40-man roster, and the Red Sox are keeping him available in case they need him to pitch this weekend.
“We’re just keeping options open leading into next week after the off day (Thursday),” interim manager Chad Tracy said before Boston’s game against the Blue Jays on Tuesday .
Payton Tolle will start Tuesday. Brayan Bello will start Wednesday in the series finale against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Tracy confirmed.
The Red Sox have an off day on Thursday, before beginning a three-game home series against the Astros on Friday.
They have not yet decided on any of their starters this weekend against Houston .
“Right now we’re TBD,” Tracy said about Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Tracy said the Red Sox want to get through Wednesday’s game before making any decisions.
“Obviously he’s not pitching tonight and we’re just gonna reassess ... after we get through the week,” Tracy said.
Bennett has a 0.86 ERA in five starts for Worcester, allowing two earned runs, 12 hits and three walks while striking out 16 in 21 innings. He has thrown 68 four-seam fastballs total, averaging 93.0 mph with a perceived velocity of 93.9 mph.
Boston acquired Bennett from the Nationals for pitching prospect Luis Perales on Dec. 15. The 2022 Washington second-round pick out of Oklahoma missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He returned strongly in 2025, recording a 2.27 ERA in 19 outings (18 starts) across Low-A, High-A and Double-A. He posted a 2.56 ERA over his final 10 outings (nine starts) at Double-A Harrisburg.
“Big-time strike thrower,” Tracy said. “The velocity and the fastball has obviously ticked up. He was coming off an arm injury when he was with Washington. But when he’s sitting there 94 — another guy kind of like Tolle, doesn’t throw as hard, but big guy that really gets down the mound with big extension. So he tends to get in on hitters, too, because the fastball plays up.
“He’s in the zone a lot,” Tracy added. “Does a good job of holding runners. He can go from a slide step, he can use a leg kick, lands all stuff. But he’s really, really good, at least down there has been, of getting the ball in the strike zone. And he gets a lot of weak contact.”
