Not even 48 hours ago, the Boston Red Sox celebrated a 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles . The win broke a four-game losing streak and brought alive the quiet bats of a team off to a 10-17 start to the season.
By nightfall Saturday, though, the trajectory of the Red Sox ' season completely changed as principal owner John Henry , chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and team president and CEO Sam Kennedy unexpectedly flew down to Baltimore.
The trio relieved Alex Cora of his duties just 27 games into the second season of a $21.75 million contract. They also fired five of Cora's coaches and announced that Jason Varitek was re-assigned to a different role in the organization.
