FOXBOROUGH —The snow at Gillette Stadium was pretty on Sunday, but for most of the afternoon, the football wasn’t.
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud threw four interceptions. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye fumbled four times (losing two) and threw a pick. Houston running back Woody Marks lost a fumble, too.
Still, the Patriots found a way to win the turnover-fest, 28-16, and punch their ticket to the AFC Championship Game. In the victory, Stefon Diggs (four catches, 40 yards, one touchdown) said his team “100%” learned a lesson about themselves.
“Battling adversity,” Diggs said. “We talked a lot about it during the week, that a fight ain’t a fight until you meet resistance. Until they swing back. And they definitely were swinging back the whole time. Being able to weather and come out with a W, I just feel like — I’m thankful.”
Diggs then pointed to one drive in particular that didn’t end in points. With the Patriots leading in the fourth quarter, Tommy Townsend pinned them at their own 4-yard line. The Patriots bled 6:09 off the clock, running the ball on eight of 10 snaps, mostly in jumbo personnel. They flipped the field in the process.
“We had some good plays, we had some bad plays, but that drive in the fourth quarter when they knew we were running the ball and we ate up like six, seven minutes of the clock,” Diggs said. “Even though it ended with a (punt), that meant a lot. We drove 40 yards and we were running the ball. They knew we were running the ball. It said a lot about our o-line. I know we’ve got some guys banged up or some guys dealing with some stuff. And Rhamondre (Stevenson) continues to show up.”
