The minor league baseball season begins Friday with the Worcester Red Sox hosting Syracuse at Polar Park . In the coming days, games will get underway at Double-A, High-A and Single-A as Red Sox prospects come north from Fort Myers. Here are the top prospects who will start the year at each affiliate with Connelly Early ( who is ranked No. 3 by Baseball America ) as the only top-15 prospect starting in the majors.
TRIPLE-A WORCESTER
A couple of arms who are likely to help the Red Sox in the majors will begin the year in Triple-A, as expected. No. 1 prospect Payton Tolle is there and will make his season debut Sunday , and No. 6 prospect Jake Bennett is pitching the opener at Polar Park on Friday.
Other prospects in Worcester include No. 16 Tyler Uberstine and No. 18 Mikey Romero , who were both in major league camp.
DOUBLE-A PORTLAND
The headliner in Portland is going to be shortstop prospect Franklin Arias (No. 2) , who will be back with the Sea Dogs after a 10-game cameo there last season. Arias is the best position player prospect in the system and could be promoted to Triple-A soon with a strong start.
Among pitching prospects, righty John Holobetz (No. 14) appears headed for Portland’s rotation.
HIGH-A GREENVILLE
As The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported Wednesday , High-A Greenville will boast perhaps Boston’s three most exciting young pitching prospects. 2025 draftees Kyson Witherspoon (No. 4), Marcus Phillips (No. 9) and Anthony Eyanson (No. 13) will all begin the year together in Greenville. Phillips was a candidate for a lower assignment but the Red Sox reportedly chose to keep the trio of close friends together.
Witherspoon, Phillips and Eyanson won’t be alone on a stacked Greenville roster. Right-hander Juan Valera (No. 5) will start at High-A Greenville, according to a source, as well as talented outfielder Justin Gonzales (No. 7) and infielder Henry Godbout (No. 10).
EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING
Shortstop prospect Dorian Soto (No. 8) will begin his season in extended spring training before joining an affiliate, according to a source.
