Plunge Air review 2026: We tested it to see if it's worth the price

Dabbled in ice baths and liked the results? Then you might be ready to take the plunge into a more serious setup. The Plunge Air is a portable version of the company's sleek flagship model, packed with features for those who take recovery seriously — and have the budget to match.

Cold plunging is often praised for speeding up muscle recovery and reducing inflammation. Some people also report benefits like reduced stress, improved mood and even support with weight loss. At first glance, it might seem like something you could just do in your own bathtub with a few bags of ice — and technically, you probably could. But top-tier plunges like the Plunge Air are closer to hot tubs than bathtubs, offering features like motorized chillers, precise temperature control and filtration systems that keep the water clean and ready to use.

While these features aren't essential for everyone, if you're planning to plunge regularly, more basic setups can get old fast — constantly buying (or making) ice, draining and refilling the tub and cleaning between uses adds up quickly in both time and cost.

As a registered dietitian and wellness editor, I was excited to put the Plunge Air through its icy paces (and compare it to a cheaper alternative ). After owning it for two months, here's what I really think about whether the premium price tag is worth it.

Assembly is straightforward, but you'll need your phone

The Plunge Air itself isn't heavy — only 28 pounds unfilled — but because the delivery box came with all the extras, I needed a dolly to move it from my doorstep to the garage. The unboxing and assembly (excluding filling the pod) took me about 30 minutes, which is double the time listed on the website. While it took a little longer than expected, the process was still super-easy. All you have to do is scan the QR codes and follow the step-by-step instructions — some of which even have videos. That said, I personally prefer a physical manual over scrolling through my phone, so that might be why it took me a bit longer.

The hardest part was deciding where to put it and getting it set up properly. Because the tub weighs over 900 pounds when filled, it has specific placement requirements. For example, it may be too heavy for some decks or porches to safely support. The good news is you don't need a special outlet — the Plunge Air works with a standard 110-volt outlet. And here's a pro tip: The AI help bot on the company's website is really useful when it comes to figuring out where you can safely place the tub.

All of that said, inflating the tub took less than two minutes. So, once you know where everything is supposed to go, I'd imagine that future setups would take 15 minutes, if not less.

If you'd rather skip the heavy lifting and unboxing, you can opt for in-home delivery, which includes setting it up where you want (as long as it's on an entry-level floor) and removing all the packaging.

It's comfortable and easy to use

Sure, it's not as sleek or luxurious-looking as the original Plunge , but for someone like me — with a move on the horizon and plans to take it up to a family cabin now and then — the portability of the Plunge Air is a major plus.

Setting the temperature is straightforward: You can either set it on the chiller using the up or down buttons or by using the app. Both are easy to use, though if you're going from cold to hot, adjusting the temperature is a bit faster using the app. Just a heads-up: The chiller is loud when you first turn it on. I was caught off guard by the high-pitched sound and, honestly, a little concerned it would keep going. Thankfully, after a few minutes, the noise settled into more of a loud white noise, similar to a clothes dryer. It was still noticeable but much less jarring once it evened out.

Once the water is to temp and you've climbed in, it feels a lot like sitting in a bathtub, just with much higher sides. The sloped design makes it easy to lean back and get comfortable as you try to find your zen while sitting in icy water. 

Plunge Air: It's packed with features

The Plunge Air packs in all the bells and whistles you'd expect at a higher price point, with the bonus of a portable design. It features an automatic chiller with remote monitoring, durable construction, an easy-to-change filter, a sleek design and an optional heater. For me, the heater is the second-biggest selling point (after portability). It heats up to 104°F, giving you the option of both hot and cold recovery. Just a heads-up: If you go with the heater, it's recommended to use the unit outdoors to avoid excess condensation. I installed mine in the garage and kept the garage door open for proper ventilation, which worked just fine.

While you can save $2,200 by skipping the chiller, I highly recommend making the investment — or considering a lower-cost plunge. I tested a version without a chiller , and while manually adding ice isn't a deal breaker, it gets old fast (not to mention expensive) if you're plunging more than once or twice a week. Plus, that extra $2,200 doesn't just buy the chiller — it also includes a filtration system to help keep the water clean so you don't have to constantly drain and refill.

If you're looking to upgrade, the Plunge Air is compatible with the company's Pro Chiller . The biggest differences between the Pro and the Standard are that the Pro has a stronger motor, cools to 37°F (rather than 39°F) and has a larger filter. Oh, and it will increase the total price of the Plunge Air to more than $4,600. 

The last notable feature is the smartphone connectivity features, which allow you to adjust the temperature and monitor the cleanliness of your tub. It also includes guided breathwork sessions, which I personally found helpful for taking my mind off the cold and easing into cold plunging. I also appreciated being able to set the temperature ahead of time from my phone, though, once I was in the tub, I didn't use the monitoring feature. I'm only up to sitting in cold water for about three minutes, but I could see it being handy for longer plunges. 

Plunge Air: You'll want to budget for ongoing maintenance costs

Speaking of cleaning, Plunge sells maintenance kits, which start at $143, for the standard chiller. This includes three filters, testing strips, a measuring spoon and two cleaners, one for eliminating contaminants and the other for maintaining proper pH levels. The company recommends performing a deep clean of the unit every six months and replacing the filter at least once a month. The Plunge app comes in handy here as you can set up automated maintenance reminders.

Because of how heavy it is, draining is a bit tricky if it isn't installed outside — you can't just carry it to your yard and let the water out. I ended up filling and dumping buckets to drain it, which wasn't the most convenient method, but it worked. If you're setting it up indoors or in a garage like I did, just know that you'll want a plan in place for draining, especially if you don't have a floor drain nearby.
