According to the Center on an Aging Society , back pain is the leading cause of missed work days in the United States, accounting for an estimated 83 million lost work days each year. While a range of medical and lifestyle factors can contribute to these aches and pains, your sleep setup may also play a role — especially if the discomfort is worst in the morning and improves as the day goes on, notes Dr. Hossein Aziz , board-certified spine surgeon at the DISC Sports and Spine Center in California.

Endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association for back pain, the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress has become a popular pick for shoppers seeking pressure relief without a high-dollar price tag. "Foam mattresses tend to be much easier on joints and have longer durability than their spring counterparts, making them a popular choice," says Dr. Anthony Izzo , DO, neurologist and Sleep Center Medical Director at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass. He adds that individuals with orthopedic issues, particularly hip discomfort, may find that foam mattresses provide relief for morning stiffness thanks to the gentler, contouring support these mattresses provide.

At $649 for a queen , the Nectar Classic is a far more affordable alternative to other popular choices that tout back pain relief. For instance, Tempur-Pedic mattresses typically range in price from roughly $2,000 to nearly $10,000. And two of Yahoo's top picks for back pain — the Saatva Classic and the Beautyrest PressureSmart 2.0 Hybrid — clock in at almost $1,900 and $1,300, respectively, when purchasing a queen.

So the question begs to be asked — does a lower price mean lower performance?

Not necessarily. "A higher price doesn't guarantee better sleep, and a lower price doesn't automatically mean poor quality," says Terry Cralle , RN, certified clinical sleep educator and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council. Instead, she recommends focusing on comfort, support, materials, durability and overall fit for the sleeper. In other words, your preferred sleep position — and how well a mattress aligns your spine — matters more than the sticker price.

To see how the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress performs in the face of back pain — and whether it's a good, budget alternative to pricier models — Yahoo tester Carrie Buda slept on it for a full month. Here's what she found.

The delivery and setup

Unlike a traditional mattress that arrives full-size and ready to flop onto your bed frame, the Nectar Classic Memory Foam shows up compressed inside a surprisingly hefty box. It's the classic bed-in-a-box setup : rolled, vacuum-sealed and compact.

Buda said the mattress arrived quickly, and she appreciated that Nectar kept her updated throughout the shipping process. After placing the order, the company reached out to schedule a two-hour delivery window, which added a layer of predictability that's especially helpful if you're trying to coordinate time off of work or need to wrangle pets.

The biggest hurdle? Getting the box to the bedroom. "It was heavy to transport," she said, noting she needed help from family members to maneuver it inside. Once it was in place and unwrapped, however, things got much easier. "The setup — once it was in the bedroom and opened — was easy. It expanded fast."

While the mattress visibly expands within minutes, Nectar notes it can take up to 72 hours to reach its full height. That said, it's safe to sleep on the first night — no waiting required.

As for that telltale "new mattress smell"? Nectar says off-gassing should be minimal and short-lived, which matched Buda's experience. "There was an off-gassing smell for about 15 minutes," she said, "but it dissipated quickly once I opened the windows in the bedroom, and there was no lingering smell."

Shipping is free. If lifting a 70-plus-pound box doesn't sound feasible for you, Nectar offers white glove delivery for $199, which includes mattress setup and removal of your old mattress . Just keep in mind: while they'll haul away your mattress, they won't take your bed frame if you're replacing that too.

Durability, materials, perceived firmness and shape retention

To evaluate the Nectar Classic Memory Foam, we followed our standard mattress testing process , which looks at durability, materials, firmness, comfort and how well a mattress holds its shape over time.

Durability

It's too soon to make long-term durability claims, but early impressions were positive. Buda reported no loose stitching, uneven seams or visible defects. "The mattress construction seems very high quality and durable," she said.

As with most all-foam mattresses, long-term performance will depend on foam density and how well the layers resist body impressions — details Nectar doesn't fully disclose. That said, the mattress earned a 5 out of 5 for durability after eight years of simulated use in Consumer Reports testing, which is a strong indicator that it could be a solid investment.

It's also worth noting that all Nectar mattresses come with a limited lifetime ("Forever") warranty that applies only to the original purchaser and covers specific manufacturing defects. For the first 10 years, defective mattresses are replaced at no cost; after 10 years, Nectar will repair or replace the mattress, with a $50 each-way transportation fee that is waived if a defect is confirmed.

Materials

Nectar shares some high-level information about the mattress construction, though specifics are limited.

Here's what we do know:

• CertiPUR-US certified foams:This means the polyurethane foam has been independently tested for content, emissions and durability, including limits on certain harmful chemicals.

• Fiberglass-free:Nectar confirms the mattress does not contain fiberglass, though it doesn't publicly specify which flame-retardant alternative is used.

• Three memory foam layers:Sandwiched between a top and bottom fabric cover, the mattress includes three foam layers marketed for pressure relief, motion isolation and foundational support.

What's less clear is how those three layers differ from one another in practical terms. Nectar refers to a "pressure-relief layer" and a "motion isolation layer," but the brand doesn't provide detailed specs — like foam density, thickness or exact composition — that would allow shoppers to make apples-to-apples comparisons with competing models. We reached out to customer support via live chat for more clarity, but weren't able to get any additional technical details.

Memory foam has a well-earned reputation for contouring closely to the body and easing pressure at the shoulders and hips — but it's also known for retaining heat. Nectar markets the Classic mattress as a cooling mattress, pointing to "cooling fibers" in the cover and a breathable design meant to encourage airflow. That said, we couldn't find specifics explaining how this construction differs from traditional memory foam beds in terms of airflow or heat dissipation. We posed that question to the support team as well and didn't receive a concrete answer, making it difficult to gauge how meaningful those cooling claims are. And to that end, these "cooling" claims are often just unsupported marketing lingo. "Even foam mattresses marketed as 'cooling' still may retain more heat than a spring mattress," says Izzo. This is because foam mattresses don't have the benefit of allowing air to naturally circulate around springs to help carry body heat away from the sleeping surface.

In real-world testing, Buda found the mattress ran a bit warm. "I'm typically a hot sleeper," she said, "but when I sleep on this mattress, I'm a little warmer than usual." That doesn't necessarily make it a deal breaker — especially for those who prefer a cozier feel — but for shoppers who prioritize temperature regulation, it's not an ideal match.

Perceived firmness

The Nectar Classic Memory Foam is rated an 8.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), placing it squarely in the firm category. Buda agreed with that assessment: the center of the bed felt notably firm and supportive.

Edge support, however, was another story. When sitting or lying near the perimeter, she reported that the mattress felt softer and less stable. "I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping on the edge," she said.

In the middle of the mattress, support was more consistent. She felt adequately supported whether sleeping on her side, back or stomach. That said, repositioning wasn't exactly easy. As is common with denser memory foam, rolling over required a bit more effort than it might on a hybrid or innerspring mattress. Motion isolation was decent — but not exceptional. She noticed slight movement when her dog shifted positions during the night.

If an 8.5 firmness sounds too firm, Nectar offers softer options. The Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress (rated 7.5/10) falls into the medium-firm category and includes additional foam for a slightly more cushioned feel. The Nectar Luxe Memory Foam Mattress (6.5/10) offers a more contouring, medium feel.

While there's no one-size-fits-all "best" firmness level, a 2021 review of 39 studies found that medium-firm mattresses tend to provide the most consistent support for comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment — potentially making the Premier model a better choice for sleepers who want a balance between cushioning and structure.

Shape retention

After two weeks of testing, Buda reported no visible sagging, dips or changes in the mattress's overall structure. Just as important, there were no new aches or pains to report during the break-in period. By the one-month mark, she said her overall comfort had improved compared to her previous mattress, which had occasionally triggered back pain.

Comfort level: The initial experience

Yahoo's mattress testing process involves short tests (such as lying on your side, stomach and back for 10 minutes each, and lying close to the edge of the bed to assess edge firmness), along with extended, at-home sleep testing over time.

Buda's first impression was mostly positive, with a few caveats. She found the mattress comfortable and supportive across sleeping positions, noting no immediate pain, pressure buildup or soreness during the short tests.

That aligns, at least in part, with third-party testing. In lab evaluations from Consumer Reports , the mattress earned a 5 out of 5 for back-sleeper support, but only a 3 out of 5 for side-sleeper comfort — a split that makes sense for a firmer, all-foam design. Side sleepers who need deeper cushioning at the shoulders and hips may find it less forgiving than medium or medium-firm models.

Edge support, however, proved to be a consistent weak spot. When sitting or lying near the perimeter, Buda noticed significant sinkage. It didn't interfere with comfort when she stayed centered on the mattress, but this isn't a bed that invites you to sprawl out to the very edge — or perch there comfortably while putting on socks.

Comfort level: What ongoing testing revealed

Our testers slept on each mattress for at least two weeks in their own homes, then weighed in on how it performed night after night. They evaluated overall comfort, whether sleep felt improved or disrupted, how refreshed or pain-free they felt in the mornings, whether the mattress slept hot or cool and how much motion transfer they noticed when sharing the bed with a partner, children or pets.

After a full month, Buda's feedback was largely positive. Aside from sleeping slightly warm — a common complaint with other all-foam mattresses we tested — she was satisfied with the mattress's performance. Most notably, she reported waking up with less soreness compared to her previous (non-memory foam) mattress. While it didn't dramatically transform her sleep, she felt it delivered solid comfort and support for the price , making it a worthwhile investment overall.

What about customer service?

As part of our testing process, we asked our tester to contact customer support with questions about the brand's return policy to see how responsive and helpful the company would be.

Buda reached out via email and received a response within 12 hours. She described the reply as genuinely helpful and thorough, addressing her questions clearly. We also reviewed the company's Returns page and found it well organized, with straightforward information about warranties, sleep trials, returns, refunds, exchanges and cancellations — a plus for shoppers who want the fine print upfront.

Nectar offers a 365-night trial, allowing customers to return the mattress for a full refund if they're not satisfied. To initiate a return, you'll need to contact customer support via email, phone or live chat. Once the process begins, customers have 30 days to submit any required documentation. There's no return fee, which is a notable perk compared to many competitors. Just keep in mind that the mattress must be clean and undamaged. After the pickup partner provides a receipt confirming collection, Nectar processes the refund, which typically takes seven to 10 business days to be credited back to the original payment method.

For due diligence, we also tested the brand's live chat with return policy-related questions. Unlike our earlier attempt to get more detailed information about materials, this time the responses regarding returns and fees were prompt, clear and specific — suggesting customer service may be most reliable when addressing policy rather than product-construction questions.

Is there a class action lawsuit against a Nectar mattress?
